This project is a pinch bowl that is 2 ¾” tall and 5” wide. The bowl is in the shape of a hand holding a bowl. The project was glazed in sand on the outside and opaque/white on the inside with sand again on the inside of the fingers. The shape of the bowl along with the color creates the illusion of a hand holding a separate bowl.
Coil Pot
This project is my coil pot. The bottom pattern is a single coil that spirals up three layers before reaching the next layer. The second layer is a ramp that spirals up to the top of the pot. Underneath the ramp was cut away to make pillars to support it as it ascended. For the pot I used only a couple long coils that I could spiral instead of many thin coils that I would have to stack. This process was harder because I had to make long thin coils without breaking them but I am happier with the outcome than I think I would have been if I had used the conventional method. For coloring I used shadow green for the bottom half and inside and used black to emphasize the ramp. I didn’t put the black on thick enough so it came out with more of an earth tone which I think is more natural and it blends with the shadow green better.
Soft Slab
This project is my soft slab plate. The bottom part is a series of three coils that make up the foot ring. On top of the coils is the slab plate. For the plate I used only one piece of clay on top of the coils so that I would have plenty of room for my design. For coloring I used black on all of it and then used a sponge to remove all the glaze from the area around the groves of the pattern. the black was almost a dark blue so it came out with more of a cool tone which in my opinion looks a lot better with the natural color of the baked clay.
Firm Slab
This project is my firm slab triangular plate thing. The entire structure is comprised of triangular pieces of cay. On top is the flat slab plate. For the plate I used one piece of clay that I then cut into four equal sized pieces. Three of the pieces are attached to the remaining one at 45 degree angles. For coloring I used black on all of it and then used a sponge to remove all the glaze from the area around the groves of the pattern so that it would match the coloring of my soft slab plate. The black was almost a dark blue so it came out with a cooler tone which in my opinion looks a lot better with the natural color of the baked clay.
Skull
This project is a skull that is 5½” tall, 5” wide, and 7” long. The skull is in the shape of exactly that, a skull. It was made in two separate pieces that were then put together before bisquing. The bottom section, including the teeth and cheek bones, was carved out of a solid block of wedged clay where as the top was built using the pinching technique. The project was glazed metallic brown, sponged off, and finally dipped in a clear coat. The shape of the project along with the color obviously distinguishes this as a replica of a human skull. I really like how this project turned out with both the shape and the colors used in it.
